Short answer

Surfer SEO: pick it if your job is writing and optimizing content, and tracking whether AI answers mention your brand. From $49/mo. See Surfer plans
Semrush: pick it if you need the whole SEO picture: keyword research, competitors, backlinks, site audits and rank tracking. SEO Toolkit from $139.95/mo; Content Toolkit $60/mo. See Semrush plans

They overlap less than the “vs” suggests. Surfer is a content and AI-visibility platform; Semrush is a research and analytics suite that also sells a content toolkit. Many teams end up with Semrush for research and either Surfer or Semrush’s own Content Toolkit for writing.

Surfer SEO vs Semrush comparison by task

Content optimization vs keyword research

Surfer: Content Editor and AI visibility

Surfer now pitches itself as a platform “for teams that want to win AI search.” Its FAQ describes four pieces: AI Tracker (visibility score, mention gaps, competitor share of voice), Topical Map for planning content clusters, Content Audit to monitor performance and flag ranking drops, and the Content Editor, whose live guidelines are meant to help content rank in search results and get cited in AI chats. Plans include an AI writing assistant (Surfy), an AI detector and “humanizer,” 1-click content optimization and 1-click internal linking (pricing). Surfer says it works with all languages.

A caution: Surfer’s Content Score is its own metric, and “humanizer” tools don’t make content more useful. Original information and editing do. We don’t recommend using any tool to disguise AI text.

Semrush: Content Toolkit and SEO Writing Assistant

Semrush’s Content Toolkit ($60/month, 7-day free trial) includes unlimited standard articles, 5 “SEO-boosted” articles a month (10 more for $30/month), the SEO Brief Generator, Topic Finder, a Content Optimizer, AI rewriting and chat, up to 50 brand voices, and one-click export to up to 100 WordPress sites (Content Toolkit). Separately, the SEO Writing Assistant and Topic Research come with the SEO Toolkit’s Guru plan and up (SEO Toolkit).

This is where the two genuinely compete. If you already pay for Semrush Guru, its writing tools may be enough; if you only write, Surfer or the Content Toolkit costs less than a full Semrush SEO plan.

This is Semrush’s territory. The SEO Toolkit covers competitor and keyword research, position tracking and site audits. Limits scale by plan: Pro monitors 5 websites, tracks 500 keywords and crawls 100,000 pages a month; Guru raises that to 15 sites, 1,500 keywords and 300,000 pages, plus historical data and Looker Studio reporting; Business goes to 40 sites, 5,000 keywords, 1 million pages, SEO Share of Voice and API access (SEO Toolkit).

Surfer doesn’t try to be a backlink or technical-audit tool. Its Content Audit focuses on how your existing articles perform and which ones to refresh.

AI search visibility features

Both now sell AI-search tracking, which wasn’t true a couple of years ago.

  • Surfer: a standalone AI Tracker plan at $82/month billed yearly tracks 50 prompts refreshed daily across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and other models, with mention gaps, brand sentiment and 5 brand spaces. The Standard plan includes 25 prompts refreshed weekly (pricing).
  • Semrush: its pricing page now leads with Starter, Pro+ and Advanced plans for “SEO & AI Search,” monitoring 5, 15 or 40 websites and tracking 500, 1,500 or 5,000 keywords (prices). Prices for these tiers didn’t load in a form we could check today, so we don’t quote them.

Recommended Surfer SEO and Semrush stack by profile

How we review

We compared both tools using only their official pricing pages and Semrush’s knowledge-base pricing articles, all checked October 12, 2026. We sorted features by the task they serve, noted where a claim is the vendor’s own (Content Score, “Google-compliant” guidelines), and left out prices we couldn’t confirm. We haven’t run a hands-on test for this comparison, so we make no claims about ranking results or output quality.
