What’s new (TL;DR)

TL;DR

  • Rollout: October 7, 2026 — GPT-6 with Intelligent UI began rolling out globally to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise in Chat; Free and Go the next day (OpenAI, Oct 7, 2026).
  • Models in Chat: GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise; GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go (same post). Caveat, in transition: OpenAI’s Help Center, checked October 16, 2026, says Free and Go use GPT-5.6 Luna (Help Center).
  • Intelligent UI: responses can mix text, visuals and interactive elements; not available on Pro effort (GPT-6 Astra); no separate quota (Help Center).
  • GPT-6.1 Sol: in Work and Codex for Plus+ plans; not yet in Chat; API gpt-6.1-sol at $2 / $0.10 cached / $10 per 1M (OpenAI, Sep 29, 2026).

OpenAI’s October 7 post frames GPT-6 as the Chat experience for more than a billion weekly users, with Intelligent UI as the headline product change and faster first tokens on Instant for web-search questions. This piece maps which model each plan actually gets, what Intelligent UI can and cannot do per the Help Center, and a Free vs Plus decision using official plan facts only — we have not run our own ChatGPT tests with dated screenshots.

Which GPT-6 do I get?

OpenAI’s October 7 announcement is the clearest Chat mapping:

ChatGPT plan (Chat tab) GPT-6 model (per Oct 7 blog)
Free, Go GPT-6 Luna per Oct 7 post and pricing table; Help Center says GPT-5.6 Luna (in transition)
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise GPT-6 Sol

Source: GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone, checked October 16, 2026. Enterprise availability also depends on admin settings.

The ChatGPT pricing comparison table we opened on October 16, 2026 agrees on model flags: Free lists GPT-6 Luna as Yes and GPT-6 Sol as No; Go lists GPT-6 Luna as Yes and GPT-6 Sol as No; Plus and Pro list GPT-6 Sol as Yes (chatgpt.com/pricing). Free also lists “Unlimited text chats with GPT-6” on the plan card.

Help Center caveat (treat as in transition): the GPT-6 Help Center article (updated about six days before our check) still describes Free and Go Instant as using GPT-5.6 Luna in several places, while also describing GPT-6 Sol powering Instant–Extra High for eligible paid users as GPT-6 rolls out (Help Center). For this article we prioritize the dated October 7 product post and the live pricing-table model flags for “which GPT-6 you get.” Today, October 16, 2026, the Help Center states: “Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna and do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol,” and for Instant, “Free and Go use GPT-5.6 Luna.” Until OpenAI’s pages agree, treat the Free and Go model as in transition.

Thinking levels (paid Chat)

Per the Help Center, when GPT-6 is selected: Instant, Medium, High and Extra High are powered by GPT-6 Sol; Pro effort uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra. Availability by plan:

ChatGPT plan Medium & High Extra High Pro (Astra)
Plus Included Not included Not included
Pro Included Included Included
Business Included Included Included
Enterprise Included Included Included
Free and Go Not included Not included Not included

GPT-6 Pro (Astra) in Chat is available on Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise (workspace permissions may apply). Plus includes GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not as Chat Pro effort (Help Center).

Intelligent UI explained

OpenAI describes Intelligent UI as GPT-6 composing answers with text, visuals and interactive elements (graphics, buttons, forms, charts, in-chat tools) when that format helps — or plain text when it does not (Oct 7 post).

Help Center limits that matter in practice (Help Center):

  • Available on web and supported updated apps with GPT-6 at Instant through Extra High.
  • Not available with Pro effort (GPT-6 Astra).
  • Older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support these capabilities — use the web app.
  • Update mobile apps to the latest version.
  • No separate usage quota for Intelligent UI; existing model, tool and plan allowances still apply.
  • To reduce visuals on web: Settings → turn off Layout and visuals. Some visuals may still appear; it is not a full text-only mode.

OpenAI also reports (internal evaluations, Oct 7 post): for questions that need web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner, on average, than GPT-5.6 Instant. That is OpenAI’s figure, not ours.

GPT-6 vs GPT-6.1 Sol vs GPT-6 Astra — where each shows up

Model Chat Work / Codex API (standard short-context)
GPT-6 Luna Free & Go (Oct 7 blog; pricing table) — $0.10 in / $0.01 cached / $0.50 out per 1M (gpt-6-luna)
GPT-6 Sol Plus+ Chat (Oct 7) — $2.00 in / $0.20 cached / $10.00 out (gpt-6-sol)
GPT-6 Astra Chat Pro effort on eligible Pro/Business/Enterprise; Plus gets Astra in Work/Codex Yes (Plus+) $10.00 in / $1.00 cached / $50.00 out (gpt-6-astra)
GPT-6.1 Sol Not yet in Chat (Sep 29 post) Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu $2.00 in / $0.10 cached / $10.00 out (gpt-6.1-sol)

API prices: platform.openai.com/docs/pricing, checked October 16, 2026. Chat/Work placement: Oct 7, GPT-6.1 Sol, Help Center.

OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Sol post positions it as near-Astra intelligence on several of OpenAI’s own agentic/coding evaluations at about one-fifth of Astra’s standard input/output token prices. Those benchmark claims are OpenAI’s; we do not cross-compare them with Anthropic or Google tables here.

Plan prices (USD, official help pages)

The live ChatGPT pricing page rendered Brazilian Real in our October 16, 2026 browser session (Free R$0, Go R$39.99, Plus R$99.90, Pro from R$525 / month). We do not convert those figures. For USD, OpenAI’s Help Center and US Go announcement state:

Plan USD price (official source)
Free $0
Go $8 / month in the US (Introducing ChatGPT Go, Jan 16, 2026; localized elsewhere)
Plus $20 / month (What is ChatGPT Plus?, Help Center updated within ~12 hours of our check)
Pro 100 / 200 / 500 $100 / $200 / $500 per month (About ChatGPT Pro tiers)

Plus and Pro are billed monthly (no annual option on those Help Center pages). Business Premium seat pricing on OpenAI’s business pricing page: $100/month billed annually or $125 monthly (standard seat price was not shown in our fetch of that page).

What this changes for you

We have not published dated screenshots of our own ChatGPT accounts for this article. The guidance below is research-based on official plan and model maps, plus cost math on published API prices where relevant.

Decision flowchart for ChatGPT Free vs Go vs Plus vs Pro after GPT-6

Stay on Free if…

  • Unlimited everyday text covers your needs. The model is in transition: GPT-6 Luna per the Oct 7 post and pricing table, GPT-5.6 Luna per the Help Center (checked Oct 16, 2026).
  • You rarely need Medium/High thinking, Codex, Work on mobile/web, or higher tool limits.
  • You accept limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and memory (pricing plan card).

Consider Go ($8/mo US) if…

  • You want more tool messages, uploads, images, voice and longer memory than Free, and GPT-6 Luna is enough.
  • You can accept that the plan may include ads (pricing page / Go card).

Upgrade to Plus ($20/mo) if…

  • You need GPT-6 Sol in Chat (not Luna), Intelligent UI on Instant–High, and advanced reasoning access described on the Plus card.
  • You use ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, expanded Codex, projects, scheduled tasks or custom GPTs.
  • You want GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in Work/Codex (Help Center / GPT-6.1 Sol post) — still not Chat for 6.1 Sol.

Jump to Pro ($100–$500/mo) if…

  • You need Chat Pro effort (GPT-6 Astra), Extra High thinking, or the higher usage tiers OpenAI describes for Pro.
  • Ultrafast on GPT-6 Astra / GPT-6.1 Sol is listed only on Pro 500 among Pro plans (Pro tiers).

If you build on the API instead of Chat

Same 1M-input + 200K-output sketch on official Standard short-context rates (API pricing):

Model Cost for 1M in + 200K out
gpt-6-luna (1 × $0.10) + (0.2 × $0.50) = $0.20
gpt-6-sol / gpt-6.1-sol (1 × $2.00) + (0.2 × $10.00) = $4.00 (6.1 Sol cached input is $0.10/1M when cache hits)
gpt-6-astra (1 × $10.00) + (0.2 × $50.00) = $20.00

ChatGPT subscription fees are separate from API billing (Plus Help Center).

How to reduce Intelligent UI visuals

On ChatGPT web: Settings → turn off Layout and visuals. Expect fewer visual elements, not a guaranteed classic text-only mode (Help Center).

Limitations

  • Help Center still mixes GPT-5.6 Luna language for Free/Go Instant while the Oct 7 post and pricing table assign GPT-6 Luna — treat Free/Go model naming as mid-rollout.
  • Intelligent UI unavailable on Pro/Astra effort and on older desktop apps.
  • GPT-6.1 Sol is not in Chat yet.
  • GPT-6 Pro usage is limited even on Pro plans; hitting a limit does not cancel the subscription (Help Center).
  • Speed/quality claims (including the 44% Instant figure) are OpenAI’s internal evaluations.
  • No dated first-party screenshots in this article.

FAQ

Is GPT-6 free? OpenAI’s October 7 post and the pricing table say Free users get GPT-6 Luna, but the Help Center, checked October 16, 2026, says Free and Go use GPT-5.6 Luna. Treat it as in transition. Either way, Free doesn’t get GPT-6 Sol.

What is GPT-6 Luna? The GPT-6 variant OpenAI assigns to Free and Go in Chat (Oct 7 post). On the API it is the low-cost GPT-6 tier at $0.10 / $0.50 per 1M input / output (API pricing).

Is GPT-6.1 Sol in ChatGPT Chat? No. OpenAI states it is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and via the API as gpt-6.1-sol, and is not yet available in Chat (GPT-6.1 Sol post).

Does Intelligent UI cost extra messages? Help Center: no separate usage quota; normal plan/model/tool limits apply.

Should I pay for Plus just for GPT-6? Only if you need Sol-tier Chat, higher thinking levels, Work/Codex expansion, or the Plus feature set above. Free already lists unlimited text chats with GPT-6 (Luna). That call is about product surface, not a quality score from us.
