Surfer SEO vs Frase comparison table

Research and content briefs

Surfer plans content with Topical Map, which it says helps you research and plan clusters to build topical authority, and the Content Editor, whose live, competition-based guidelines are meant to help a page rank in search and get cited in AI chats (Surfer pricing FAQ).

Frase starts from what it calls a loop: Frase Answers, a free on-site widget, captures questions your visitors ask; Frase then studies what already ranks for a topic and drafts the piece in your voice. Professional adds a content calendar (Frase pricing).

The difference in philosophy: Surfer gives a writer guidance; Frase increasingly does the work, with you approving.

AI writing and on-page optimization

  • Surfer: every plan includes the Surfy AI writing assistant and an AI detector and “humanizer.” Its plan cards list 1-click content optimization from Standard and 1-click internal linking as a Pro addition (the comparison table on the same page shows them more broadly, so confirm on your plan). Surfer calls its Content Score “the gold standard in the industry,” which is its own claim.
  • Frase: every plan includes research, an AI writer and images, SEO and GEO scores, and an agent that can draft and auto-publish when you switch it on. Internal linking suggestions start on Professional. Frase says plainly that it won’t promise a ranking or citation within a 7-day trial.

We don’t recommend “humanizer” tools to disguise AI text; edit and add original information instead. Neither score is an independent measure of quality.

Content monitoring and AI search visibility

Frase Content Guard watches published pages for Google rank and traffic decay, writes the fix and republishes on your approval (10 pages on Starter, 75 on Professional, 300 on Scale). AI Visibility tracks 20, 50 or 75 prompts: ChatGPT and Google AI on Starter, plus Perplexity on Professional, plus Claude and Gemini on Scale (Frase).

Surfer Content Audit monitors performance, flags ranking drops and suggests refresh candidates. AI Tracker shows a visibility score, mention gaps, competitor share of voice and brand sentiment; Standard tracks 25 prompts refreshed weekly, and higher tiers track more with daily refresh (Surfer).
