Verdict in 30 seconds

Surfer is still built around one idea: before you write or refresh a page, it shows you what the pages already ranking for that keyword cover, then scores your draft against those guidelines as you write. In 2026 it adds tracking of whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI features mention your brand.

Buy Surfer if you publish or refresh a steady stream of articles (dozens a month) and want one score and one set of guidelines your whole team follows. Skip it if you write a few posts a month, need keyword and backlink research more than on-page guidance (Semrush fits better), or want to try before entering a card (Frase’s trial needs no card). If you trial it, put a reminder on day 6: Surfer’s trial converts to a paid plan automatically.

What Surfer is in 2026

Surfer’s pricing FAQ describes four pieces: an AI Tracker for your visibility in AI answers, a Topical Map for planning content clusters, a Content Audit that watches existing pages and flags ranking drops, and the Content Editor, whose “live guidelines help you write new and refresh existing content.” The Content Score is Surfer’s metric for how closely a draft follows those guidelines. Surfer says its guidelines draw on “an analysis of over 500 web and AI signals.”

Surfy, Surfer’s AI SEO assistant, and a Humanizer are listed even on the cheapest plan. Higher plans add 1-click internal linking, a cannibalization report and MCP access, which Surfer’s trial page describes as a way to “connect your AI agent to Surfer.”

Ownership: Positive Group announced it had acquired Surfer on October 28, 2025. The company behind the app is Surfer Sp. z o.o., based in Wrocław, Poland, per the pricing page footer.

Surfer SEO pricing plans checked October 30, 2026

What each plan adds

  • Discovery ($49/mo yearly): 120 documents to create or optimize, 10 tracked pages, AI SEO optimization guidelines, Surfy and the Humanizer. Surfer calls it the plan “to test Surfer.”
  • Standard ($99/mo yearly): 360 documents, 25 AI prompts tracked weekly, integrations, Brand Knowledge, 1-click content optimization, team collaboration, a plagiarism checker and rank drop detection.
  • Pro ($182/mo yearly): everything in Standard plus 50 AI prompts refreshed daily, 5 brand spaces, 1-click internal linking, content ideas and coverage gaps, templates and custom voices, the cannibalization report and MCP.
  • Peace of Mind ($299/mo yearly): everything in Pro plus 100 daily AI prompts, unlimited* documents and brand spaces, advanced SERP analysis, API access, personalized onboarding and a dedicated success manager.
  • AI Search Analytics ($82/mo yearly): a tracking-only plan for brand visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and other models, with 5 brand spaces and MCP.

Integrations listed on every plan are WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful and Zapier.

Annual billing is paid upfront

Surfer’s FAQ is direct: on an annual plan, “you’ll be charged for the entire year,” with a discount of “up to 17%” versus monthly. It also says that on an annual plan your credits “reset yearly or after changing your plan,” so you don’t get a fresh monthly allowance. Plan your document use across the year.

Payment is by credit or debit card (monthly and yearly) or bank transfer (yearly only). Surfer says it does not support PayPal.

The 7-day trial needs a card

Surfer’s help center (article dated October 29, 2026) says the trial gives 7 days of the Pro plan for free. You choose a plan and enter billing details at checkout; after 7 days the subscription “automatically converts to the plan you selected at checkout, and your card is charged.” The trial is for new accounts only, and a card already used on a Surfer account isn’t eligible. If you cancel during the trial, you keep access until it ends, then the account expires “and you will lose access to any stored data.”

How to cancel

To cancel the trial: Settings > Billing > Your subscription, then Cancel subscription at the bottom right, and confirm. For a paid plan, Surfer’s FAQ says you turn off auto-renewal on the in-app Billing page; you keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for. The pricing FAQ doesn’t describe a refund policy, so don’t count on one.

Key features, per Surfer’s pricing page

  • Content Editor and Content Score: real-time guidelines while you write, plus a score for how closely you follow them. Listed on every plan.
  • SERP Analyzer, Keyword Research, Topical Map and Content Audit: research and monitoring tools listed in the plan comparison.
  • Surfy (AI SEO assistant), AI Detector and Humanizer: AI writing help inside the editor.
  • 1-click internal linking: highlighted on the Pro card.
  • Cannibalization report: finds pages competing for the same queries; highlighted on Pro.
  • AI visibility tracking: prompts tracked in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, with mention gaps and brand sentiment.
  • MCP and API: MCP on AI Search Analytics, Pro and Peace of Mind; API access on Peace of Mind.

A caution on the page’s own claims: Surfer calls the Content Score “the gold standard in the industry” and says its guidelines are “designed to improve both ranking and AI citations.” Those are marketing claims. No tool can guarantee rankings, and we make no ranking claims here.

Who should (and shouldn’t) buy Surfer

Buy Surfer if:

  • You run a content team or agency publishing and refreshing many articles a month
  • You want one shared standard (the Content Score) for writers and editors
  • You also want to track how AI answers mention your brand

Skip Surfer if:

  • You publish a handful of posts a month: Discovery’s 120 documents would mostly go unused
  • You need keyword, competitor and backlink data first: see Semrush below
  • You want a trial without a card: Frase offers one

Surfer alternatives

Frase

Frase covers research, briefs, writing and optimization, plus AI visibility monitoring and its own publishing tools. On October 30, 2026 its pricing page showed Starter at $39/mo billed yearly ($49 monthly), Professional at $103/mo ($129 monthly) and Scale at $239/mo ($299 monthly), each with a “Free 7-day trial. No credit card.” It’s cheaper to start than Surfer and easier to try. Read our Frase review or the head-to-head Surfer SEO vs Frase.

Semrush

Semrush is the broader toolkit: keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking and more, rather than a writing-first editor. Its pricing page showed the SEO plan at $139/mo month to month ($117.33/mo billed annually), Starter at $199 ($165.17 annually) and Pro+ at $299 ($248.17 annually), with a 7-day free trial. How we evaluated

We read Surfer’s official pricing page (yearly and monthly views, plan cards, comparison table and FAQ), its help-center article on the trial, and the acquisition announcement, all on October 30, 2026, with times logged in BRT. We did the same for Frase and Semrush pricing. Where the comparison table uses icons only, we relied on the text of the plan cards. We did not run Surfer on live content or measure rankings, so nothing here is a test result. Opinions are marked as opinions.

FAQ

Is Surfer SEO worth it?
For teams that publish and refresh content at volume, yes: the shared guidelines and Content Score are the core value. For a few posts a month, Frase or a research tool like Semrush is likely better value. That’s our opinion based on the published limits.

How much does Surfer SEO cost?
Discovery $49, Standard $99, Pro $182 and Peace of Mind $299 per month billed yearly; $59, $119, $219 and $359 month to month. AI Search Analytics is $82 yearly or $95 monthly (USD, checked October 30, 2026).

Does Surfer SEO have a free trial?
Yes: 7 days of the Pro plan for new accounts. You enter a card at checkout and the plan you picked starts automatically unless you cancel first.

Is Surfer SEO free?
No. There’s no free plan on the pricing page; the trial is the only free option.

Is Surfer SEO good for beginners?
The Content Editor is easy to follow, and Discovery is pitched as the plan to test Surfer. Beginners still need to choose good keywords, which Surfer’s guidelines don’t do for you.

Surfer SEO vs Frase: which is better?
Frase is cheaper to start ($39/mo yearly) and its trial needs no card. Surfer has more team features and AI-visibility tiers. See our full Surfer SEO vs Frase comparison.

How do I cancel Surfer SEO?
During the trial: Settings > Billing > Your subscription > Cancel subscription. On a paid plan: turn off auto-renewal on the in-app Billing page; access continues until the paid period ends.

Verdict

Surfer is a mature, team-friendly content optimization tool with clear document limits and AI-visibility tracking added on top. It earns its price when you produce content at volume. Watch three things: the trial charges your card automatically, annual plans are paid upfront with yearly credit resets, and internal linking and cannibalization reports are Pro features. Start with the trial, set a reminder, and drop to Discovery or Standard if Pro is more than you need.
