Verdict in 30 seconds

Base44 builds a working web app (pages, database, user login and backend) from a plain-English description, and hosts it for you. For marketers and small teams, that means internal tools you’d otherwise never get a developer for: a lead-intake form with a dashboard, a pricing calculator, a client portal, a content calendar.

Buy Base44 if you want to ship small business apps without code, you can describe what you want clearly, and $16 to $40 a month (billed annually) fits your budget. Skip it if you need predictable costs per change (Base44 says credit cost is only known after an action runs), you can’t accept no refunds on cancellation, or you want a plain marketing website (a site builder is simpler). Start on the Free plan: 25 message credits a month is enough to learn whether your idea fits.

What Base44 is in 2026

Base44 describes itself as a no-code AI platform that uses “vibe coding”: you describe what you need in plain language and it builds the “frontend, backend, database, user auth, payments” for you. Every plan, including Free, lists:

  • AI-powered app building and a responsive visual editor
  • An integrated backend and database system, with cloud storage
  • Authentication and user management
  • An analytics dashboard, marketing tools and debugging tools
  • Multi-user editing and collaboration

Ownership: Wix announced it had acquired Base44 on June 18, 2025, for an initial consideration of about $80 million plus earn-out payments through 2029. Wix said Base44 would “continue to operate as a distinct product and business,” and the pricing page footer today reads “© 2026 Wix.com Ltd.”

Base44 pricing plans with message and integration credits, checked October 30, 2026

Base44 pricing and credits

Here’s what base44.com/pricing showed on October 30, 2026. Yearly billing is the default view and saves 20%. We clicked the Monthly toggle for the month-to-month prices.

Plan Billed annually Month to month Message credits/mo Integration credits/mo Apps
Free $0 $0 25 100 Up to 5
Starter $16/mo $20/mo 100 2,000 Unlimited
Builder $40/mo $50/mo 250 10,000 Unlimited
Pro $80/mo $100/mo 500 20,000 Unlimited
Elite $160/mo $200/mo 1,200 50,000 Unlimited

Our arithmetic: annual billing is charged once a year, so Starter is $192 upfront, Builder $480, Pro $960 and Elite $1,920. Base44’s FAQ says the discount is “the monthly price multiplied by twelve, charged once a year” with 20% off.

What changes as you move up, per the plan highlights:

  • Starter: unlimited apps, in-app code edits, connect a domain, free domain for 1 year (yearly plan only). The billing docs add removing the Base44 badge from your app.
  • Builder: adds AI model selection, GitHub integration and 25 credits to share with a friend (yearly).
  • Pro: adds early access to beta features.
  • Elite: adds premium support. The docs say Elite has a drop-down with 6 credit sizes (50,000 to 300,000 integration credits).
  • Business and Enterprise sit above Elite, with security, governance and SSO features. Enterprise is priced by sales.

Payment is by card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover); invoices and ACH are for Enterprise. Base44 says it offers education and non-profit pricing case by case, and an academic discount appears in its billing docs.

Free plan limits

The Free plan gives 25 message credits a month, and the billing docs add a cap of up to 5 message credits a day within that total. Only your personal workspace gets free message credits; other Free workspaces get integration credits only. You get 100 integration credits, up to 5 apps, and core features (authentication, database, analytics). Base44 says you “can ship complete apps” on Free. In our opinion, 25 messages is enough to build and judge one small tool, not to run a project.

Message credits vs integration credits

This split is the most important thing to understand before paying:

  • Message credits are used when you talk to Base44’s AI while building: prompts that plan, update or fix your app.
  • Integration credits are used when your live app uses Base44’s built-in services: sending an email (~1 credit), uploading a file (~1), generating an image (~1), an LLM call on the automatic model (~1), generating video (~5 per second), and in-app AI agents (from ~3 per message on the automatic model). Base44 says calling an external service with your own API key does not use integration credits, and about 100 backend-function invocations use roughly 1 credit.

Base44’s credit docs give typical message costs: about 0.5 credits for a simple text or visual change, about 1 for improving a small feature, about 2 for a complex module, and 3 to 4 for an app-wide change. “Discuss mode” (brainstorming without changing the app) uses about 0.3 credits per message.

The catch, in Base44’s own words: “There is no set credit amount used per message,” credits “are calculated after the action runs,” and “there is no way to preview an integration credit cost before running an action.” These are estimates, and Base44 says they can change.

Diagram: Base44 message credits versus integration credits with typical costs

Annual vs monthly

Annual saves 20% but you pay the year upfront, and Base44 says canceling “does not issue a refund for the current subscription period.” If you’re unsure, start monthly. The docs say switching from monthly to yearly later credits the unused part of your current month. Moving from one monthly plan to a higher monthly plan charges the price difference, and unused credits carry over for one more cycle.

What manual edits cost

Nothing. Base44’s credits page says manual visual edits, like dragging elements, changing layouts or editing text directly in the editor, “do not use credits.” Use the editor for small fixes and save credits for real changes.

What you can (and can’t) build

Base44’s own examples are productivity tools, back-office systems, customer portals and full products. For a marketing or SEO team, that maps to internal tools: lead forms that write to a database, client dashboards, calculators, content trackers, simple portals with login. The docs also describe a social media content plan generator that uses integration credits.

What we’d be careful with, in our opinion:

  • Unpredictable spend on big changes. App-wide edits cost several credits each, and you only see the cost afterward.
  • Heavy AI features inside your app. Every email, upload, image or LLM call your users trigger draws on integration credits, unless you call an outside service with your own API key.
  • Anything that needs certainty about scale or performance. We did not build or load-test an app, so we make no claims there.

Lock-in: what is portable and what isn’t

Base44’s pricing FAQ says: “You own everything you build on Base44: your code, your data, your users. Two-way GitHub sync exports the full source code to your own repo at any time. Nothing is locked to the platform.”

Two caveats from the same official pages:

  1. GitHub integration is listed from the Builder plan up ($40/mo annually). It isn’t in the Free or Starter highlights, so confirm before you rely on it at those tiers.
  2. Exported code is not the same as a running app elsewhere. Your app uses Base44’s built-in backend, database, auth and services. Base44 says its backend platform is in beta and uses integration credits. Moving off Base44 means replacing those pieces with your own hosting and services. That’s our reading of the docs, not a test.

If you cancel, your workspace drops to Free at the end of the billing period: you keep up to 5 published apps and choose which ones stay up. The others are unpublished.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Full app (frontend, backend, database, auth) from plain-English prompts
  • Free plan with every core feature and up to 5 apps
  • Manual visual edits don’t use credits
  • Clear split between building credits and app-usage credits
  • Official FAQ says you own your code and data; GitHub sync from Builder up

Cons

  • Credit cost per action is only known after it runs
  • No refund on cancellation for the current period
  • Free plan is tight: 25 message credits a month, 5 a day
  • GitHub integration not listed on Free or Starter
  • Card-only payment for non-Enterprise plans

Who should (and shouldn’t) use Base44

Use Base44 if:

  • You need small internal tools or client portals and don’t have a developer
  • You can write clear, focused prompts (the docs say focused prompts use fewer credits)
  • You’re fine starting on Free, then paying $16 to $40 a month

Skip Base44 if:

  • You only need a marketing website or landing page (see our best AI website builder for small business guide)
  • You need a fixed, predictable cost for every change
  • You want to host the app on your own servers from day one

Base44 alternatives

Hostinger AI Builder (site plus hosting)

If what you really need is a website, not an app, Hostinger AI Builder is closer to the job. Its page says you “describe what you want, and AI Builder creates it for you,” and the plans bundle hosting, a custom domain (free for 1 year) and mailboxes. On October 30, 2026 its US page showed, all on 48-month terms paid upfront:

Plan Shown as Paid today Renews at
Premium (up to 3 websites) $2.49/mo $119.52 for 48 months $10.99/mo
Unlimited (unlimited websites, ecommerce) $3.49/mo $167.52 for 48 months $16.99/mo
Cloud Startup $7.99/mo $383.52 for 48 months $25.99/mo

The page also carried a Black Friday offer (2x AI credits) and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Note the renewal jump: Premium goes from $2.49 to $10.99 a month.

Lovable (AI app builder)

Lovable is the closest like-for-like rival: an AI builder for apps and sites. Its pricing FAQ says you own your code, all plans include unlimited members, and the Free plan gives 5 build credits a day (up to 30 a month) plus 20 Cloud credits a month. Credits on monthly plans expire 2 months after they’re issued. Its pricing page loads by script and our capture showed local currency only, so we don’t quote a US price here. How we evaluated

We read Base44’s official pricing page (yearly and monthly views), its billing-and-plans and credits documentation, and Wix’s press release on the acquisition, all on October 30, 2026, with times logged in BRT. We did the same for Hostinger AI Builder and Lovable pricing. We did not build, benchmark or load-test an app, so nothing here is a test result. Credit costs are Base44’s own estimates. Opinions are marked as opinions.

FAQ

Is Base44 free?
Yes, there’s a Free plan: 25 message credits a month (up to 5 a day), 100 integration credits, up to 5 apps, and core features including auth and database (checked October 30, 2026).

How much does Base44 cost per month?
Starter $16, Builder $40, Pro $80 and Elite $160 a month when billed annually; $20, $50, $100 and $200 month to month, in USD before tax.

What is the difference between message credits and integration credits?
Message credits are used when you prompt Base44’s AI to build or fix your app. Integration credits are used when your live app uses Base44’s built-in services, like sending email, uploading files, generating images or calling an LLM.

Does Base44 lock you in? Can I export my app?
Base44’s FAQ says you own your code and data, and two-way GitHub sync exports the full source code. GitHub integration is listed from the Builder plan up. Running the app elsewhere still means replacing Base44’s backend and services.

Does Base44 offer refunds?
Its billing docs say canceling stops future renewals but “does not issue a refund for the current subscription period.” Your workspace moves to Free at the end of the period.

Base44 vs Lovable: quick take?
Both build apps from prompts and both say you own your code. Base44 bundles its own backend, database and auth with clear credit types; Lovable’s free plan gives daily build credits. Compare current prices on each official page.

Who owns Base44?
Wix. Wix announced the acquisition on June 18, 2025, and says Base44 runs as a distinct product and business.

Verdict

Base44 is a strong fit for non-developers who need real small apps (forms, dashboards, portals) with login and a database, and its Free plan is a fair way to find out. The trade-offs are cost you only see after each action, no refunds on cancellation, and GitHub export only from Builder up. Start free, move to Starter ($16/mo annually) only once you know your app works, and pick Hostinger AI Builder instead if you just need a website.
