Best AI SEO Tools in 2026, Sorted by the Job You Need Done

Our Semrush, Frase and Surfer links may be affiliate links. Commissions don’t decide the order: tools are ranked by how many SEO jobs they cover, based on their official pages.

Prices checked October 31, 2026, 09:13–09:16 BRT, on each vendor’s official US pricing page (USD, before tax), rendered in a browser because several prices load with JavaScript. Prices change often; confirm on the vendor’s page before you buy.

“Best AI SEO tool” is a slightly broken question. SEO is at least four different jobs: finding what to write about, writing and optimizing it, keeping the site technically healthy, and, newer, checking whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews mention you. Most tools are strong at one or two of those jobs and bolt on the rest. This guide sorts the options by job, so you can build the smallest stack that covers what you actually need.

Do you need an AI SEO tool at all?

Maybe not yet. If your site is new or small, two free things go a long way: Google Search Console (which shows the queries you already appear for, plus indexing problems) and a general AI assistant to help outline and edit. Paid SEO tools start to pay off when you publish regularly, compete for keywords you don’t rank for yet, or need to report results to someone.

A common worry is whether Google punishes AI-written pages. Google’s own guidance says its focus is “on the quality of content, rather than how content is produced,” and that using AI “with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results” violates its spam policies (Google Search Central, February 2023). In practice: AI help is fine, mass-produced filler is not. No tool on this list changes that rule.

On a small-business budget? We wrote a separate guide to the best AI SEO tools for small businesses that focuses on the cheapest workable stack. This page covers the wider market, including agency and team plans.

The best AI SEO tools, by job

All-in-one research: Semrush

Semrush is the broadest tool here. Its pricing page (October 31, 2026, 09:13 BRT) now sells “SEO + AI Search” plans:

  • SEO: $139/mo monthly, or $117.33/mo billed annually. 5 websites, 500 tracked keywords a day, basic keyword research and competitor analysis, Position Tracking and Site Audit.
  • Starter (SEO + AI Search): $199/mo monthly, or $165.17/mo billed annually. Adds keyword research and optimization tools, MCP access, 50 AI prompts tracked daily and an “AI-ready Site Audit.”
  • Pro+: $299/mo monthly, or $248.17/mo billed annually. 15 websites, 1,500 keywords, historical data, content optimization and cannibalization analysis.
  • Advanced: custom pricing. A Free plan gives 1 demo project and 10 reports a day, no card required.

Extra users start at $45/mo. Pick it if you want one login for keyword research, rank tracking, audits and AI-visibility checks. Skip it if you only need help optimizing the text of your articles; a content tool is cheaper. More in our Surfer SEO vs Semrush comparison and Semrush review.

Content optimization: Frase

Frase covers the content side end to end: research, briefs, AI writing, and scoring for both search and AI answers. Official prices on October 31, 2026 (09:14 BRT):

  • Starter: $49/mo monthly, or $39/mo billed yearly ($468/yr). 1 seat, 1 site.
  • Professional: $129/mo monthly, or $103/mo billed yearly ($1,236/yr). 3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles and 250 audit pages a month.
  • Scale: $299/mo monthly, or $239/mo billed yearly ($2,868/yr). 5 seats, up to 10 domains, 100 articles and 1,000 audit pages a month.

Every paid plan lists a 7-day free trial with no credit card. Extra seats are $29/mo. Pick it if you publish articles regularly and want the brief, draft and optimization in one place. Skip it if you don’t produce content; it isn’t a rank tracker or a backlink tool. See our Frase review and Surfer vs Frase.

Content scoring: Surfer

Surfer started as a content-score editor and now sells AI-visibility tracking too. Surfer’s old domain, surferseo.com, redirects to surfer.ai. On its pricing page (October 31, 2026, 09:13 BRT), all prices are shown billed yearly, and each plan shows a “Saving” figure:

Plan Price (per month, billed yearly) “Saving” shown What it includes (highlights)
AI Search Analytics $82 $156 Tracking only: 50 AI prompts refreshed daily, 5 Brand Spaces
Discovery $49 $120 120 documents, track 10 pages, Surfy assistant and Humanizer
Standard $99 $240 360 documents, 25 AI prompts refreshed weekly, plagiarism checker
Pro $182 $444 360 documents, 50 AI prompts daily, 5 Brand Spaces, internal linking
Peace of Mind $299 $720 Unlimited* documents, 100 AI prompts daily, API access
Enterprise Custom — SSO, white-label, custom limits

We didn’t find monthly-billing prices on that view, so we don’t list them. Pick it if you already know your keywords and want a clear, scored editor for writers. Skip it if you need backlink research or rank tracking across many keywords. Read our Surfer SEO review.

Flowchart for choosing an AI SEO tool by job

Backlinks and keyword research alternative: Ahrefs

Ahrefs is the main Semrush rival for link and keyword data. Its pricing page (October 31, 2026, 09:14 BRT) listed Lite at $129/mo, Standard at $249/mo, Advanced at $449/mo and Enterprise at $1,499/mo (annual commitment). It also lists a cheaper Starter at $29/mo, a free Ahrefs Free tier for data on your own site, and Brand Radar AI for AI-prompt research “from $199/mo.” The AI Content Helper is an add-on “from $99/mo.” Skip it if your budget is under $100 a month; the free tier and Search Console are the better start.

Technical audits: Screaming Frog

The Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler that finds broken links, redirect chains, missing titles and similar issues. The official page says you can “crawl 500 URLs for free, or buy a licence for £199 per year to remove the limit.” It isn’t an AI writing tool, but almost every serious SEO stack includes a crawler. Skip it if your site is small and Search Console shows no indexing problems.

AI visibility tracking (ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews)

This is the newest category, and most big vendors now sell it:

  • Semrush includes AI prompt tracking from its Starter plan (50 prompts daily).
  • Surfer sells a tracking-only AI Search Analytics plan ($82/mo billed yearly) and adds prompts to Standard and above.
  • Ahrefs sells Brand Radar AI and prompt packages (from $50/mo for checks).
  • Writesonic builds its whole pricing around AI-search visibility (below).
  • Frase lists AI Visibility on its plans, with Claude and Gemini added on Scale.

A caution: AI answers vary by user, location and wording, so treat these dashboards as trend lines, not exact rankings. No vendor’s page we read claims otherwise, and we haven’t measured their accuracy.

Drafting plus AI visibility: Writesonic

Writesonic has repositioned around “AI search visibility.” On October 31, 2026 (09:14 BRT), prices billed annually were Starter $79/mo (50 prompts tracked daily, plus AI articles and site audits), Basic $199/mo and Growth $399/mo, with Enterprise custom and a free trial. That’s no longer a budget writing tool. Skip it if you just want cheap drafts; a general AI assistant does that. See our Writesonic review.

Use cases: the minimum stack

You are… Minimum stack Why
Solo founder Search Console + Frase Starter or Surfer Discovery You need to publish good pages more than you need data
SaaS team Semrush (or Ahrefs) + a content tool Competitive keywords and comparison pages need research data
Shopify store Search Console + Screaming Frog free + a content tool for category/blog pages Product sites often have technical issues (duplicates, filters)
Agency Semrush or Ahrefs + Surfer or Frase team plan + Screaming Frog licence Client reporting, many sites, writer workflows

If you run a small local business, our small-business guide goes deeper on keeping that stack cheap.

How we evaluated

We read each tool’s official pricing and product pages (US view, USD) on October 31, 2026, mapped which SEO jobs each one covers, and cross-checked recent independent roundups, discounting lists published by vendors that rank themselves first. Prices that load with JavaScript were read in a rendered browser view. We did not run our own ranking test and don’t claim one.

FAQ

What is the best AI SEO tool overall?

It depends on the job. For one tool that covers research, rank tracking, audits and AI visibility, Semrush is the broadest. For writing and optimizing articles, Frase or Surfer. For technical audits, Screaming Frog.

Are there free AI SEO tools?

Yes. Google Search Console is free. Semrush has a free plan (1 project, 10 reports a day), Ahrefs has Ahrefs Free for your own site, and Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs free. Frase offers a 7-day trial rather than a free plan.

Does Google penalize AI-written content?

Not for being AI-written. Google says it rewards quality “rather than how content is produced,” but using AI mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies (Google Search Central).

Which AI SEO tool is best for small businesses?

See our dedicated guide to the best AI SEO tools for small businesses. In short, start with free tools and add one paid content tool.

Surfer or Frase? Surfer or Semrush?

Surfer and Frase are both content tools; Frase leans into briefs and drafting, Surfer into scoring. Semrush is a research suite. Compare them in Surfer vs Frase and Surfer vs Semrush.

Can AI SEO tools track ChatGPT or AI Overviews visibility?

Several do: Semrush, Surfer, Ahrefs (Brand Radar AI), Writesonic and Frase list it. Treat results as trends, because AI answers change by user and prompt wording.

Bottom line

Pick by job, not by brand. If you need one tool for everything, start with Semrush. If your bottleneck is writing pages that rank, pick Frase or Surfer. Add Screaming Frog when technical problems show up. And if you’re on a tight budget, read our small-business guide first.
