Top picks (October 2026)

Semrush, best all-in-one: keyword research, rank tracking, site audits and competitor data in one place. Check today’s price
Surfer, best for optimizing the content you write, plus AI search visibility tracking. Check today’s price
Frase, best budget pick for a one-site business that publishes to WordPress. Check today’s price

These three cover different jobs. Semrush tells you what to rank for and how you’re doing. Surfer and Frase help you write and improve the pages. A small business usually needs one research tool or one content tool, not all three. This guide is based on the official pricing and product pages, checked October 10, 2026; we haven’t run hands-on tests.

Picks

Semrush: best all-in-one

Semrush describes its plans as covering “brand visibility, everywhere search happens”, meaning Google plus AI search. Its pricing page lists tiers (Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, with Enterprise above) that differ in how many websites you can monitor and keywords you can track, and says you can cancel, downgrade or upgrade at any time (prices). The per-plan prices didn’t load in our check, so confirm them on the page.

Good for: a business owner or marketer who wants to see which keywords competitors rank for, track their own rankings and get a technical audit. Limit: it’s a research and tracking suite; it won’t write or fix your pages for you. Check the plan limits against how many keywords you actually need to track.

Surfer: best for optimizing content

Surfer’s cheapest plan was listed at $49 a month billed yearly, with higher tiers at $99, $182 and $299 a month, and a separate AI visibility tracker at $82 a month (all billed yearly). Paid tiers include the AI writing assistant (Surfy) and AI visibility tracking across models like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews; Surfer’s plan cards list 1-click content optimization from Standard and 1-click internal linking as a Pro addition. Surfer says annual billing saves up to 17% versus monthly and that it works with all languages (pricing).

Good for: a business that already publishes blog posts and wants each one to cover a topic as thoroughly as the pages that rank. Limit: annual plans are paid upfront, and credits reset yearly on annual billing.

Frase: best budget pick for one site

Frase Starter costs $39 a month billed yearly or $49 month to month, for 1 seat and 1 site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month. It publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, includes SEO and GEO scores and AI visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI, and watches 10 pages for Google ranking decay. Professional ($103 yearly / $129 monthly) adds 3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles, a content calendar and internal-linking suggestions. Starter stops at its limits instead of billing overages, and there’s a 7-day free trial with no credit card (pricing).

Good for: a solo owner who wants drafts researched and pushed to WordPress. Limit: 10 articles a month on Starter; you still need to edit drafts and add what only you know about your business.

What AI SEO tools can’t do

  • Guarantee rankings. Frase’s own pricing page says it won’t promise a ranking or a citation inside a 7-day window; rankings build over weeks.
  • Replace first-hand knowledge. Google’s guidance on helpful, people-first content rewards experience and expertise. Your prices, photos, service area and customer questions are what generic AI drafts lack.
  • Fix local SEO alone. For a shop or service business, your Google Business Profile often matters more than blog posts.
  • Make mass-produced content safe. Google’s spam policies target scaled content made mainly to manipulate rankings, however it’s produced.
